John W. Powell Named a 2023 IP "Go To Lawyer" by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly
Sunstein LLP is pleased to announce that Patent Practice Group Chair John W. Powell has been named a 2023 Intellectual Property “Go To Lawyer” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
The “Go To” feature was debuted in 2020 to showcase leaders in the Massachusetts legal community by practice area. Lawyers are selected by an independent Lawyers Weekly panel based on colleague nominations.
Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly defines a “Go To Lawyer” as “an expert in his or her field; a senior attorney well-versed in case law, statutes and regulations.” Additionally, a “Go To Lawyer” is experienced, with a record of success in cases and/or transactions, someone to whom other lawyers make referrals because of his or her accomplishments, and someone who thinks creatively and identifies all options for a client. John is the third Sunstein partner to be named a “Go To Lawyer,” joining his colleagues Managing Partner, Kerry L. Timbers and Litigation Practice Group Chair, Lisa M. Tittemore.
In addition to being the chair of Sunstein’s Patent Practice Group, John is a member of the firm's Managment Committee. His practice focuses on patent portfolio management and strategy, patent prosecution, and IP transactional work, including drafting and negotiating IP licensing and development agreements and other commercial agreements having an IP component. John makes protecting his clients and positioning them to exceed their long-term business goals his top priority. He often takes proactive approaches to building IP portfolios domestically and internationally in order to maximize his client’s intellectual property value.
While working with clients, John leverages his extensive tech experience, having served in-house for nearly two decades as vice president and general counsel of American Superconductor Corporation and as in-house counsel at companies like Raytheon and Motorola. John also has extensive experience mentoring startup companies in the clean energy industry and is involved with Cleantech Open – Northeast, which is a competition and accelerator program with the mission to find, fund, and foster entrepreneurs with ideas to solve our greatest environmental and energy challenges.
