Obie has created many public works for universities, arts commissions, and corporations throughout the US and abroad. Notable projects include a lobby sculpture for a Walter Gropius-designed building in Cleveland; a large steel indoor piece at 33 Arch Street in Boston; a sculptural archway for the Central Square Theatre at MIT in Cambridge; a wall sculpture in Harvard Square; and a monumental work for California State University in Long Beach.

A Bicoastal Artistic Life

Obie divides his time between the Elkhorn Mountains in Oregon and his studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. This duality reflects his connection to both natural and urban environments, shaping his artistic perspective.

These are extreme opposites and that’s what I like to play with. These are very geometric. I also like to play with the mirror which causes an ambiguity or paradoxical space. You can see where it begins and where it ends. You can’t really see where it happens.

Raised in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon, Obie Simonis started his training with Fredrick Littman, a figurative sculptor who studied under Aristide Maillol. After receiving his BFA at the University of Oregon Simonis worked as the assistant to renowned contemporary sculptor John Chamberlain.

Simonis embarked on his public art career as an artist-in-residence, creating a monumental sculpture for Lewis and Clark College’s new Olin Science Center in Portland, OR. His first solo exhibition was presented in a NY gallery and he has since exhibited extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Today, he works out of his studio at Brickbottom Studios in Somerville, Mass.
