Elizabeth N. Spar, Ph.D., J.D.

Dr. Spar has extensive experience as a life sciences attorney, with a focus on intellectual property and patent law, including both patent prosecution and freedom to operate. Her expertise includes drafting patent applications, preparing responses to office actions, and contributing to infringement, validity and patentability analyses, including performing IP diligence for transactions such as licenses, acquisitions, and initial public offerings.  Dr. Spar’s expertise also includes participating in complex interference proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.


With more than 13 years of technical experience in diversified academic research environments, Dr. Spar has drafted patent applications in the fields of molecular and cellular biology, immunology, antibodies, RNAi, biologics, biosimilars, protein expression, genetically transformed plants for use as vaccines and immunogens, genomics, drug discoveries, gene therapy, antitumor therapies, screening assays and protease assays, as well as in drug delivery technologies involving lipid structures, nanoparticle, and other materials science technologies.

Dr. Spar’s prior positions include post-doctoral fellowships at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and pre-doctoral fellowships at Harvard University. Dr. Spar’s awards include the Women’s Cancers Program Fellowship, Dana Farber Cancer Institute; and the Ryan Fellowship at Harvard University. She received her B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College, her Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University, and her J.D. from New England School of Law. Dr. Spar is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.


Dr. Spar was named to the Rising Stars list in the practice area of intellectual property for 2014-2017 in Massachusetts, a list limited to 2.5% of the outstanding emerging lawyers in the state who are age 40 and under, or have been practicing 10 years or less. The attorneys featured in Rising Stars were selected by their peers in an extensive nomination and polling process conducted by the research team at Super Lawyers, a service of Thomson Reuters and seen in a special advertising section in Boston magazine.
