Patent Lawyer/Patent Agent (EE)

We seek a patent associate or patent agent with 1 to 3 years of patent prosecution experience, strong academic credentials, and exceptional analytical skills and writing ability.  B.S. in electrical engineering or computer science is required.

Trademark Associate

We seek an associate who will focus on prosecution and litigation of trademark matters with 2-4 years of experience, strong academic credentials, and exceptional analytic skills and writing ability. Experience with trademark and copyright prosecution and enforcement, as well as ex parte and inter partes proceedings before the TTAB strongly preferred.  A passion for counseling clients on intellectual property matters, with a focus on trademarks and copyrights, and for the litigation of intellectual property disputes is essential.  Candidate is a vigorous advocate who enjoys working in a congenial and technology-savvy atmosphere.

Executive Director

Sunstein, Kann, Murphy & Timbers LLP, a leading intellectual property law firm, seeks an Executive Director (“ED”). The ED will be a critical member of the Firm’s leadership team. He or she will provide leadership for the accounting, human resources, and information technology departments, with a goal of providing full support for the Firm’s strategic initiatives and operational goals.  Strong project management skills will be highly valued.

The ED will be responsible for identifying and planning for the current and long-term operational needs of the Firm and staying attuned to trends, changes, and best practices in the legal and professional services industries.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong financial background, marketing and business development knowledge and at least 5 years of experience working with a professional services organization.  Experience preparing budgets, analyzing financial data, managing risk, managing expenses and developing strategic plans is important. In addition, the candidate should be a strategic thinker with excellent team building and organizational skills.

Reporting Relationships

The ED will report to the Management Committee and the partnership of the Firm. The ED will be actively involved in formulating competitive strategy and growth planning. Regular, effective communication with partners is essential.

Responsibilities

The ED will be responsible for the following:

Finance: Planning, forecasting, budgeting, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, billing and collections, cash flow, banking relationships, tax planning and reporting, trust accounting, payroll, insurance programs, pension and retirement plans.

Operations/Management: Managing and contributing significantly to daily operations; strategic and tactical planning; risk management; quality control; organizational development; firm planning processes and other general management functions.

Marketing and Business Development: Client profitability analysis, support for business development, marketing, public relations, client relations; and enhancing the Firm’s image and visibility in desired markets.

Required Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • 10 years of progressively responsible leadership with 5 or more years in current position as ED, COO, CFO or similar position in a small to mid-size law firm or other professional services firm. Strengths should include strategic planning, relationship building, financial management, and marketing and business development experience.  Excellent project management, leadership and teambuilding skills are essential
  • A strong financial background (CPA and/or MBA preferred; absent one of these degrees, a BS in Business Management, Finance or Accounting is required) with in-depth knowledge of budgeting and financial analysis practices in a professional service environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in an intellectual property boutique is a plus
  • Uncompromising ethics, integrity, and credibility

Compensation

Sunstein Kann Murphy & Timbers LLP offers a comprehensive compensation and benefit package consistent with industry standards. Actual salary is dependent upon qualifications.
