Thomas J. Tuytschaevers

Tom Tuytschaevers is Counsel at Sunstein, where he focuses his practice in patent preparation and prosecution matters, invention mining, product clearance, portfolio development and evaluation, and licensing. Tom also has experience in litigation discovery, transaction due diligence, and commercial matters including sales terms and conditions, indemnities, warranties and non-disclosure agreements.

Experience

  • Tom practices across an extensive range of technologies, including: electrical systems, computer hardware and software, analog and digital circuit design, integrated circuit design, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), medical devices and instrumentation, alternative energy, photovoltaics, power supplies, graphics processing, speech processing, semiconductor fabrication, internal combustion engines, rotary engines, and business methods.
  • Prior to joining Sunstein, Tom was a member of the legal department at a multi-billion dollar semiconductor company where he counseled senior management and technical staff on a variety of patent, copyright, mask work, trademark and trade secret matters. Tom was also responsible for a variety of commercial matters, such as the negotiation and drafting of license agreements, sales terms and conditions, custom product development agreements, and non-disclosure agreements, and was heavily involved in due diligence and licensing related to a number of divestitures. In that position, Tom also traveled extensively to meet with engineers to elicit invention disclosures, and to educate the worldwide sales force on the company ethics policy.
  • Prior to law school, Tom worked as an engineer at a defense contractor where he focused on missile guidance radar design, and also developed test station hardware and software.
  • Tom teaches at Northeastern University’s School of Technological Entrepreneurship, and previously developed the curriculum for the University’s Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property program.

Professional and Community Involvement

  • Tom is a member of the Board of Directors of Traveling Theatre, Inc., a non-profit organization providing artistic experiences for youth that strengthen creativity, literacy, problem solving, cooperative learning, self confidence, and the life skills to face everyday challenges.
  • Tom is a volunteer mediator in the Sheldon W. Rothstein Mediation and Conciliation Program in the Dedham District Court.
  • Tom has presented at seminars at the Boston Bar Association.
