Peter J. Karol

Peter is a partner at Sunstein and a member of the firm’s IP litigation, trademark, business and copyright practice groups. Peter is an experienced patent, trademark and copyright litigator, having brought and defended numerous suits in various federal courts across the country, including patent litigations in the fields of telephony, automotive products, pharmaceuticals, computer software, child safety products, and sporting equipment. Peter also manages global trademark portfolios, with a focus on higher education, wine and distilled spirits, clean energy and finance. He has extensive experience drafting complex IP agreements and licenses. Peter also advises start-up and established companies in matters involving capital-raising and securities regulation. Peter is a member of the adjunct faculty of New England Law | Boston.

  • Represented an innovator in the field of voice over internet protocol in patent litigation in the Eastern District of Texas.
  • Represented a leading holiday ornament company in copyright and trademark litigation in federal court in Massachusetts.
  • Represented a medical equipment company in false advertising litigation in federal court.
  • Represented Belvedere Winery with respect to federal infringement litigation concerning the Winery’s BELVEDERE trademark.
  • Achieved a precedent-setting district court and appellate victory in the field of computer security software.
  • Represented a large chain of pizzerias in a trademark infringement litigation in federal court.
  • Represented a leading domain name acquisition and trading company in trademark and cybersquatting litigation in federal court in Virginia.
  • Represented a large wine producer in connection with negotiating a major national distribution agreement and license with a leading U.S. wine distributor.
  • Manage the trademark portfolio for one of the world’s preeminent universities, and myriad large and small businesses across various industries and technologies.
  • Brought and defended numerous trademark oppositions before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
  • Advised clients engaged in international trademark oppositions before various administrative bodies in Europe, Australia and Asia.
